Olise Inspires Bayern Munich to German Supercup Win at Dortmund

Michael Olise scored once and set up another goal as Bayern Munich opened the season by beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 away in the German Supercup on Saturday. Bayern secured the trophy for a 12th time, with Olise decisive in a first half that gave the visitors enough of a cushion to withstand Dortmund’s late pressure.

Olise created Nathaniel Brown’s 28th-minute opener before capitalising on a poor Jobe Bellingham backpass to score just before half-time. Dortmund responded after the break and pulled one back through Fabio Silva, but Maximilian Beier missed a stoppage-time opportunity to force an equaliser.

The result gave Bayern a second consecutive Supercup success since the competition was renamed for club legend Franz Beckenbauer in 2025. It also delivered an early statement in a season-opening match between two league rivals.

Olise makes the difference before half-time

Bayern were described as rusty and did not resemble the side that lost only once domestically last season, but they found the quality required to take control. Olise was Bayern’s most dangerous attacker, repeatedly advancing down the right flank and playing a central role in both first-half goals.

The opening goal arrived after Olise surged forward and was brought down on the edge of the box. The ball ran to Brown, operating in an unfamiliar attacking-midfield role after being selected there by Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. Brown finished calmly to put the visitors ahead in the 28th minute.

Dortmund thought they had levelled late in the first half when Ramy Bensebaini glanced in a Julian Ryerson cross. The hosts’ celebrations were cut short, however, when the offside flag was raised.

Bayern then added a second moments before the interval. Olise seized on Bellingham’s backpass, held off the advancing defenders and slotted the ball home. The goal capped an influential first-half display from the Bayern attacker, who had also starred for France at the World Cup.

Harry Kane said the away victory over a league rival represented an important start to the campaign. He described it as “a magnificent victory to kick off the season” and highlighted the value of winning a trophy at Dortmund’s home stadium.

Dortmund rally falls just short

Dortmund improved after half-time and sustained pressure on Bayern’s goal, but the visitors held firm for long periods. Bayern had an opportunity to extend their advantage when Olise found Kane in a central position, only for the England striker to blast over the bar.

The hosts finally found a way through with 15 minutes remaining. Fabio Silva turned in a Daniel Svensson cross after clever work from debutant Giannis Konstantelias, reducing the deficit and setting up a tense closing period.

Silva had another chance three minutes from time, but his header went into the waiting arms of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. In the final minute, Bensebaini was sent off with a straight red card for a clumsy tackle on Bayern debutant Ismael Saibari.

Despite playing with 10 men, Dortmund had one final opening deep into stoppage time. Beier went through one-on-one with Neuer but chipped over the bar, allowing Bayern to see out the 2-1 victory.

For Bayern, the Supercup success offered an immediate piece of silverware and a winning start under the pressure of following last season’s domestic achievements. Kompany said the performance showed his players retained the hunger to pursue further trophies, insisting the club would not rest after winning everything last year.

Dortmund, playing the season opener for the first time since 2021, showed greater threat in the second half but were left to regret the disallowed first-half goal and the late missed chances. Bayern’s early advantage, built by Olise’s goal and assist, ultimately proved decisive.
