Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Missed India U-19 Australia Series

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not selected in India’s 15-member Under-19 squad for the upcoming home series against Australia because of a BCCI rule that prevents players from taking part in multiple U-19 World Cups.

The 15-year-old was absent when the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced its squad for the Australia assignment, despite the source describing him as a top performer on the global stage who has also made a senior T20I debut against England. The key factor behind the omission is that Sooryavanshi has already played in the 2026 U-19 World Cup and will not be eligible to participate in another edition.

The rule means Sooryavanshi is not part of India’s U-19 plans for the series, which includes both 50-over and red-ball matches against Australia. It also provides the context for an omission that could otherwise appear surprising given his age and previous involvement at the level.

BCCI rule explains Sooryavanshi’s U-19 omission

The BCCI introduced the restriction in 2016, barring players from competing in multiple U-19 World Cups even if they remain eligible by age. The policy has affected players in previous cycles, with Washington Sundar unable to play the 2018 U-19 World Cup because of the rule.

Before the restriction was introduced, Sarfaraz Khan, Sandeep Sharma and Vijay Zol were among players who took part in multiple editions of the competition. Under the current policy, Sooryavanshi’s appearance in the 2026 tournament rules out a return for another U-19 World Cup, and his exclusion from the current Australia series follows that position.

India’s home assignment against Australia begins with three 50-over games in Rajkot, scheduled for September 18, September 21 and September 23. The teams will then play two red-ball multi-day fixtures: the first in Rajkot from September 27 to 30 and the second at the Narendra Modi Stadium B Ground in Ahmedabad from October 5 to 8.

Uttarakhand batter Lakshya Raichandani will captain the 50-over side, with Madhya Pradesh batter Yashbardhan Chauhan named vice-captain. Chauhan will lead the red-ball squad, where Raichandani will serve as his deputy.

The Junior Men’s Selection Committee, whose term is nearing its end, named the squads for the home series. The selection includes several players who will feature in the limited-overs leg but not the longer-format games.

India U-19 squad details for the Australia assignment

Aaryavir Sehwag, a leg-spin all-rounder, and wicketkeeper-batter Anvay Dravid were selected in the 15-member one-day squad. Neither player was included in the squad for the two red-ball fixtures. Aaryavir is currently playing for West Delhi Lions in the 2026 Delhi Premier League and has played two matches so far.

Anvay scored 101 runs in two 50-over games during India U19’s July tour of Sri Lanka. India lost that 50-over series 2-1 but won the red-ball series 1-0.

Manal Chauhan and Chigurupati Venkata have also been included for the 50-over matches against Australia. Sagar Virk, Anmoljeet Singh and Ishan Sood were omitted. The series offers India’s selected U-19 players a set of limited-overs and multi-day opportunities, while Sooryavanshi’s absence is explained by the World Cup eligibility policy rather than his age alone.
